What is an extremity MRI, and how is it different?
Extremity MRIs use the same magnetic resonance imaging technology as conventional scans to help doctors diagnose joint injuries, detect soft tissue damage, and monitor treatment progress.
However, instead of entering a full-body closed architecture scanner lying horizontally, you’ll only have to place the specific limb (arm, hand, leg, or foot) into a more compact scanner (MRI extremity coil). The rest of your body remains comfortably outside of the machine, preventing the confined feeling of lying in a narrow tunnel.
This open design facilitates high-quality, precise scans while accommodating patients with claustrophobia, anxiety, or mobility challenges, ultimately delivering a patient-friendly and comfortable experience.
Experience stress-free limb imaging with our open design extremity MRI in Cyprus
NO enclosed space.
NO waiting
Why endure a full-body MRI when only your limb needs attention? Our specialized extremity MRI delivers the same detailed imaging quality but focuses precisely on your arms, hands, legs, or feet—providing exceptional clarity in half the time with none of the claustrophobia

What to expect on the day of your scan
Scanxiety is real. We’ve found that knowing exactly what to expect can help ease scan-related stress
-
Check-In
01On the day of your scan, you’ll start by checking in at the reception, where you’ll be asked to fill out some forms
-
Comfortable extremity MRI suite
02From there, an MRI technologist will accompany you to the extremity MRI suite. This specialised scanner is housed in a spacious room designed to reduce outside metal interference with the magnetic waves (AKA an “RF cage”)
-
Comfortable positioning and Support
03Your technologist will help you position your limb comfortably in the MRI extremity coil while the rest of your body reclines comfortably. The technologist typically remains in the room throughout the procedure, providing guidance and support.
-
Scan procedure
04During the scan, you’ll need to keep the extremity as still as possible. The procedure takes 20-25 minutes, depending on the type of scan. In rare cases, intravenous contrast material may be administered to help generate more detailed images of the body part.
The Benefits of an MRI Extremities O-Scan
-
Comfortable Design
Our specialised extremity O-Scan SMART MRI scanner examines only the limb being studied, eliminating the stress or claustrophobia of traditional MRI scans
-
Metal Implant-Friendly
Our state-of-the-art limb scanner features the latest technology that suppresses metal distortions for clearer images, ideal for patients with implants or joint replacements
-
Dynamic Imaging
Exclusive True-Motion technology captures real-time movement of your joints, providing superior diagnostic accuracy for sports injuries
-
Safe & Radiation-Free
Unlike CT scans and X-rays, extremity MRI technology uses magnets and radio waves to safely examine joint injuries, soft tissue damage, and bone abnormalities without radiation exposure
-
Enhanced Speed & Resolution
With innovative eXP Technology, our extremity MRI delivers exceptionally detailed images of cartilage, ligaments, and small bone structures in less than half the time of conventional MRIs
-
Eco-Friendly
Experience eco-friendly innovation with the O-Scan SMART, one of the industry's most energy-efficient MRI devices. It delivers precise diagnostic insights while championing sustainability and reducing environmental impact

FAQ
-
How soon can I get a non-claustrophobic MRI scan?
Nobody should have to wait weeks to get clear answers about their health. We schedule all MRI extremities scans within two days of booking. Book online or contact us to secure your appointment today
-
How can I make an appointment for an extremity MRI scan through GESY?
All our imaging centres are registered with the National Healthcare System of the Republic of Cyprus (GESY). To book an appointment for an MRI scan covered by GESY, you must provide a referral from a GESY specialist. Once you have your referral, you can book online or fill out our form to get started
-
How long does it take to receive my extremity MRI scan results?
On average, our centres provide all scan results within five business days of your
examination -
How do I prepare for my MRI extremities scan?
Most extremity MRI scans for upper and lower limbs require no preparation. Remember, an MRI machine is a huge magnet, so try to wear comfortable clothes that don’t have any metal detailing to avoid having to change into a medical robe. Any metal objects, such as jewellery, belts, and dentures, must be removed before the procedure
-
What’s included in the booking price?
Your MRI scan booking fee includes an optional pre-scan consultation with a medical
professional, a written diagnosis of your images from a radiologist, digital or physical
copies of your scans, and access to an online patient portal where you can view all your reports and images at any time -
What is your cancellation policy?
We offer cancellations and refunds if you request them within the outlined timeframe
before the booking date. In some cases, a cancellation fee may be applied. Read our
