What is a DEXA scan?
DEXA, or Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry scans, use low-dose X-rays (ionising radiation) to assess bone density, which is a direct reflection of bone strength and overall health.
The two different types of X-rays emitted are absorbed differently by soft tissues, which combine to produce a clear image of different bone structures in the body
What is DEXA scanning used for?
Doctors use DEXA scans to screen for and monitor the progression of certain degenerative bone and joint diseases, such as osteoporosis and osteopenia.
However, DEXA scanning is also used to monitor the recovery of broken or fractured bones and other conditions that may affect bone integrity
A Cyprus DEXA scan today could save your bones from a life-altering event tomorrow
Everyone’s bones get thinner with age; however, genetics, lifestyle, and pre-existing medical conditions can make some more susceptible to bone density loss. Osteoporosis, for instance, shows virtually no visible symptoms until a fracture occurs
DEXA scanning helps catch the first signs of bone degeneration, providing you with the opportunity to start treatment and prevent serious injury

The benefits of DEXA scanning
-
Quick & Painless
The DEXA scanning process is non-invasive and does not require any special preparation. We even offer same-day and walk-in appointments, often with same-day results
-
Affordable
Due to the incredibly high resolution that 3D mammograms produce, doctors are able to analyse smaller details that would potentially require further testing if done on a conventional 2D scan
-
Early Detection
The high resolution offered by DEXA scans allows doctors to detect osteoporosis in its early phases, helping patients seek the necessary treatments to shield their bones from serious damage

FAQ
-
Can a DEXA scan detect bone cancer?
While DEXA scans are not an ideal method for bone cancer detection, some doctors may include DEXA scanning as part of a cancer treatment or monitoring plan
-
Are there any health or safety risks associated with a DEXA scan?
Like any X-ray scan, DEXA scans expose the patient to a small amount of ionising radiation; however, the risks of contracting cancer from this level of exposure are extremely low. That being said, DEXA scans are not recommended for pregnant individuals unless the benefits strongly outweigh the risks of not having the test
