What is a mammogram?
A mammogram is a special X-ray machine specifically designed to detect the signs and progression of breast cancer. Doctors typically use mammograms to screen for calcifications, masses, asymmetries, distortions in tissue, breast density, and other changes in the breast tissue and structure.
Ultrasound scans are often used to compare with mammograms, particularly in women with dense breasts, family histories of concern, or clinical findings
What is a 3D mammogram?
While regular mammograms take 2-dimensional images of the breast and often require multiple angles for an accurate diagnosis, a 3D mammogram, or tomosynthesis, provides a more comprehensive view. Abnormalities and dense breast tissue masses are often similar in color to healthy breast tissue and may require further screening to detect when using 2D devices.
Our new system takes this further by combining Full‑Field Digital Mammography (2D) and Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (3D), offering high‑resolution, crisp images and multi‑layer visualization. Special Spot Exposure and Magnification modes help in the earlier detection of small findings and microcarcinomas.
Additionally, unique pseudo‑color innovative technology displays tiny calcifications with enhanced clarity. The integrated AI intelligent analysis supports the radiologist with accurate lesion measurement, BI‑RADS structured classification, and benign/malignant prediction with up to 90% accuracy.
Early detection results in a 98% survival rate for breast cancer patients
Waiting to see the physical signs of breast cancer can make survival an unnecessary struggle. To prevent stress and costly treatments down the road, doctors recommend mammographic screening for women aged 40+ once every 1-2 years
Annual breast screening can open the door to faster treatment and improve treatment outcomes if an anomaly is found. Start your informed breast health journey at Elvetiko today
What it can detect
-
Calcifications
Tiny calcium deposits that may or may not be cancerous
-
Masses
Areas of abnormal breast tissues, such as cysts, fibroadenomas, or solid masses, that may or may not be cancerous
-
Asymmetries
White areas that deviate from the normal breast tissue pattern may require more testing to determine whether they are cancerous
-
Distortions in tissue
Breast tissue may appear distorted due to many factors, including injury and position during the scan. Sometimes, this can indicate a tumour
-
Breast density
High breast density, or breasts with a high volume of fibrous and glandular tissue, may present a higher risk for breast cancer

What to expect on the day of your scan
Scanxiety is real. We’ve found that knowing exactly what to expect can help ease scan-related stress
-
Check-In
01On the day of your scan, you will start by checking in at the reception

Comfortable procedure without pain
02A technologist will be assigned to you. They will accompany you into an examination room, where you will be asked to stand in front of the 3D mammogram machine. Unlike older models, our machine features a humanized ergonomic design and a multi level intelligent flexible compression system. This significantly reduces breast compression time and patient discomfort. In simple words: minimal pressure, maximal confidence.

Scan procedure
03This process is then repeated on the other breast. In some cases, you may be asked to repeat the process to get various angles of your breast. Depending on your breast size and the phase of your menstrual cycle, this may be somewhat uncomfortable. The entire process usually takes no longer than 30 minutes
The benefits of a 3D mammogram
-
Early Detection
Several studies suggest that 3D mammograms are 80% more effective at detecting breast cancer in its early (and manageable) phases than digital mammographies, increasing the probability of successful treatment
-
Fewer Call-backs
Due to the incredibly high resolution that 3D mammograms produce, doctors are able to analyse smaller details that would potentially require further testing if done on a conventional 2D scan
-
Up to 54% Lower Radiation
With the innovative T I D E imaging technology, the radiation dose can be lowered up to 54% compared to traditional molybdenum exposure, while maintaining HD low dose imaging quality. Your safety is our priority.

FAQ
-
How often should I get a mammographic screening?
Doctors recommend mammographic screenings every 1-2 years for individuals 40+ who are not pregnant or breastfeeding. If you notice a lump or abnormality, make an appointment with your general practitioner immediately to get referred for a mammogram. No referrals required at any of our centres
-
Are there any health or safety risks associated with a mammographic screening?
Numerous studies have shown that the small amount of ionising radiation emitted during mammograms is safe for annual exposure during routine screenings, except for pregnant or breastfeeding individuals. We don’t recommend getting a mammogram more than once every 12 months
-
How do I prepare for a 3D mammogram?
Avoid using a spray deodorant or talcum powder in the days leading up to your scan, as it may get picked up by the mammogram and provide false positives
-
Is the mammogram procedure painful?
Due to the mild pressure placed on the breast during the exam, you may feel some mild discomfort or pain, depending on your bread size and the phase of your menstrual cycle. We recommend booking your mammographic screening outside of your menstrual period to avoid any pain associated with breast tenderness
-
How can I make an appointment for a 3D mammogram through GESY?
We are registered with the National Healthcare System of the Republic of Cyprus (GESY), which offers mammographic screenings once every two years. To book an appointment for an ultrasound covered by GESY, you must provide a referral from a GESY specialist. Once you have your referral, you can book online, contact us, or fill out our form to get started
-
When will I receive my mammographic screening results?
We typically provide your images and detailed report on the same day or within 1 business day of your scan
-
What does it mean if I receive a call-back?
While stressful, call-backs do not necessarily mean you have breast cancer. If you have been called back for additional testing, it simply means that either your first scan was not clear or that something showed up that requires further testing. Less than 1% of all mammograms result in a breast cancer diagnosis
-
How soon can I get a mammographic screening in Cyprus?
As soon as you need. We offer same-day mammograms and walk-in appointments at all our locations
-
What’s included in the booking price?
Your mammographic screening booking fee includes a written diagnosis of your images from a radiologist, digital or physical copies of your scans, and access to an online patient portal where you can view all your reports and images at any time
