What is an MRI scan?
A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan is a non-invasive exam that uses a strong magnet, radio waves and – when needed – contrast agents to produce highly detailed images of the body. During the scan you lie still inside a large, tube-shaped machine. Doctors use these images to diagnose conditions, plan treatment and monitor how well that treatment is working.

What to expect on the day of your scan

01On the day of your scan, check in at reception and complete a short form.

Preparation and instructions
02Your MRI technologist will then take you to the exam room and explain how to position yourself in the scanner, depending on the area being imaged. If you need it, we can offer mild anti-anxiety medication or, in selected cases, sedation on request.

Support during scanning
03The technologist steps out of the room, but you can talk to them at any time through the headphones you’ll be wearing.

The scan itself
04Stay as still as possible during the scan. You can listen to music through the headphones to help you relax. Most scans take 20 to 90 minutes, depending on the type. In some cases we administer intravenous contrast for sharper images of the area we’re examining.

How do I prepare for my MRI scan?
Most MRI scans need no preparation, but some require fasting or an oral contrast drink a couple of hours before the exam. The MRI is essentially a giant magnet, so wear comfortable clothes without metal details if you can – it saves you changing into a gown. Jewellery, belts, dentures and any other metal items must be removed before the scan.
